Assistant Professor Position in Exercise Science at the University of Southern Alabama




THE HEALTH, KINESIOLOGY AND SPORT DEPARTMENT of the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Southern Alabama is seeking applicants for a full-time (9-month) academic position in Exercise Science at the rank of Assistant Professor.

THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES is one of nine colleges and schools that host approximately 2,000 graduate and undergraduate students. The College supports a wide range of study programs in five departments and is nationally accredited by the National Council for Teacher Education Accreditation and our educator preparation programs are accredited by the Department of Education of the state of Alabama. THE HEALTH, KINESIOLOGY AND SPORT DEPARTMENT currently has 11 full-time tenure-track professors, 4 non-tenured professors, 3 staff, 10 graduate assistants and over 600 students. The department offers undergraduate programs in exercise science, health and physical education, sport management and recreational studies, recreational therapy and health promotion. Graduate programs include exercise science, health and physical education, health promotion, and sport management. The department is home to the University of Southern Alabama (ENRG USA) Exercise and Nutrition Research Group, which is made up of a group of well-equipped collaborative laboratories capable of supporting a wide range of related research exercise and nutrition, education, community outreach and service learning activities. Current laboratory capabilities include equipment for body composition (DXA, 3D scanner, BIA / BIS, hydrostatic weighing), neuromuscular (Biodex dynamometer, EMG, nerve stimulation, force plate), cardiovascular (NIRS, ultrasound, restriction cuffs flow rate, ECG), metabolic / pulmonary (metabolic cart with exercise capacity and REE, spirometry) and biochemical / molecular (rtPCR system, microplate reader, pipetting robot, electrophoresis, freezers). An assortment of other equipment is available for stress testing, including bicycle ergometers (Velotron, Monark), treadmills, a fully equipped collegiate weight room. and other basic exercise and laboratory equipment

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION conform to those of a full-time university position (9 months) at the rank of assistant professor. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the field of exercise science, as assigned by the department chair; to conduct, publish and present research; seek external funding; provide academic advice; supervise the internship experiences of the students; participate in the development of the curriculum; collaborate with the faculty; and providing services to the department, college and university. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to employ effective teaching practices, provide experiential learning opportunities to students, and engage in program-related community engagement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS include a doctorate in exercise science, kinesiology, or a closely related discipline. ABDs near the completion of the diploma will be taken into account. Applicants should have demonstrated skills and / or experience in teaching, research and service with the ideal candidate complementing our existing programs and faculties and have the ability to work effectively in a research team.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS for the post are candidates with publications and / or experience in conducting research exploring adaptations to physical training. Experience in conducting studies involving exercise combined with nutrition or dietary supplement interventions is desirable. Proficiency in phlebotomy procedures and basic wet laboratory techniques (ELISA, PCR, electrophoresis) is highly desirable. Demonstrated leadership activities and / or certifications from ACSM, NSCA, ISSN or other related organizations are preferred. Preference will be given to applicants whose research complements the existing strengths of ENRG USA. Broadly speaking, current initiatives / projects include examining changes related to the cardiovascular, biochemical, neuromuscular and body composition of various exercise and nutrition interventions.
