Keyla Monterroso Mejia, who plays Maria Sofia on Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 11, credits Larry David for exposing his character’s poor acting.

Calm your enthusiasm Star Keyla Monterroso Mejia, who plays Maria Sofia, credited series creator Larry David with misplaying the character. The eleventh season of the popular HBO series recently wrapped and for many fans it was one of the best to date. At 74, David has managed to make audiences laugh with his unique brand of cynical, neurotic comedy since first gaining fame as the co-creator of Seinfield. Although there has been speculation about how much longer Sidewalk will continue, it still seems to be going as strong as ever.

Having already raced two more seasons than Seinfeld did, David (who plays an over-the-top version of himself) cast a wide array of co-stars to ensure the comedy stays strong. Arguably one of the best decisions made on the show was bringing in Leon Black (JB Smoove) as Larry’s roommate and friend. But in the eleventh season, David introduced a character that fans loved to hate. After being blackmailed in the first episode into making Maria Sofia the love interest of his new TV series, Larry discovers – much to his horror – that his acting is bad on an almost unprecedented level. Watching her misinterpret everything from tone to the most basic elements of timing is absolutely hilarious.

Instantly becoming one of the highlights of border eleventh season, Mejia’s poor acting ability actually requires a lot of talent to succeed. Because the series is unscripted, the character’s reactions feel so much more natural, nailing the essential cringe element that so many border comedy depends. While speaking with Inside Edition recently about her character and her time on the show, Mejia admitted that Maria Sofia’s terrible acting skills resulted from her real-life audition, during which she improvised opposite David, who “just bring something of yourself.” Mejia, 23, did his best to explain the chemistry saying:

I think it was only when I auditioned with Larry David and did some improvisation with him. He just squeezes something out of you that I can’t really explain.

Larry and Jeff seem worried on the set of Young Larry in Curb Your Enthusiasm

As many Sidewalk characters over the years, the presence of Maria Sofia has been a constant thorn in Larry’s side. The season ends with Larry fantasizing about finally being rid of her, but the audience never quite knows what happens to the character. Given its popularity, however, there is no doubt that more than one Sidewalk fans would love to see her return for the twelfth season. Longtime cast member Jeff Garlin, who plays Larry’s manager, Jeff, has previously said he doesn’t think David has had too much of it. Sidewalk remaining seasons in him. Hopefully the few that remain involve Maria Sofia’s continued ability to drive Larry crazy.

If there was a downside to the eleventh season of Calm your enthusiasmis that audiences couldn’t see enough of the production of Larry’s new TV series. It could be argued that viewers got just enough from Maria Sofia to keep her from becoming an annoying presence on the show, but a little more of the character could still have been a laugh. Hopefully, if there is a twelfth season and Mejia returns, there will be more focus on her frustrating but hilarious relationship with Larry.
