Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was very impressed with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson as he helped England to a 4-0 victory over Ukraine.
Henderson was introduced in the second half, replacing Declan Rice who was on a yellow card.
The Liverpool skipper struggled to regain full fitness and secured his rewards with his first international goal last night. Henderson heads for a nice ball from Mason Mount.
Henderson saw Kalvin Phillips and Rice take his place as regular Three Lions starters. But despite this, the Liverpool man has been praised for his attitude on and on the pitch.
And that’s something Frank Lampard picked up on last night.
Speaking on the BBC after the match was over, Lampard, along with Rio Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, praised England.
However, it was the impact and attitude that Henderson brought to the fold that Lampard distinguished.
“I think the excitement that Jordan Henderson got – and it’s not easy when you’re in your thirties – because if you’re not playing and watching Rice and Phillips, you can easily come in and say, ‘I am. do not play’,” said Lampard.
“He came with incredible enthusiasm. It has nothing to do with tactics. It is culture. It is the intention and the desire to run.
Questions were raised when Henderson was even included in the squad.
Having missed much of the season, Southgate’s decision to take him was seen as risky. But what a gesture it was by the boss of England.
Ultimately, Henderson is a winner. He has experience at the top and comes from a Liverpool side used to winning games. He is invaluable for this England team and proved it last night.
