Hillsborough County – Featured Job: Fleet Technician

Job Overview
Fleet Technician is a three level job. Holders repair and maintain fleet vehicles and related equipment, and provides customer service for small to medium sized units or functions supporting the Hillsborough County Fleet Management Department.

Level honors
Level 1: Entry-level technician with two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks or equipment.

Level 2: Has four (4) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications from the following test suites:

  • Certification testing of automobiles and light trucks (A1 – A9)
  • Alternative Fuels (F1) Certification Test
  • Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L1) certification test
  • Diesel Engine Electronic Diagnostics Specialist Certification Test (L2)
  • Mild Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist Certification Test (L3)
  • Certification tests for medium-duty trucks (T1 – T8)

Level 3: Possess a Master ASE certification in car/light truck; OR a Master ASE certification in medium/heavy truck

(After obtaining the required certifications, holders are promoted to the next level.)

Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will possess basic knowledge of vehicle and equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, testing and diagnostics. The candidate performs entry level repair, maintenance and customer service for a large repair and maintenance operation supporting the Hillsborough County Fleet Management Department. Holders of this classification perform the tasks of the operation. The candidate will have a minimum of a high school diploma or possession of a GED certificate.

Level 1 – Candidate will have a minimum of “two years” of documented full-time work experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the skills related to the rated job.

Level 2 – Applicant will have a minimum of “four years” of documented full-time work experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. experience that could reasonably be expected to provide the job-related skills noted.

Level 3 – Candidate will have a minimum of “six years” of documented full-time work experience in the repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, or equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the skills related to the rated job.

The candidate will possess an EPA approved Section 609 certification. This position is designated as Mission Essential Group B by the Department Director, which means the candidate must be able to report for work in support of business continuity and/or emergency support functions. Candidate will possess a valid Florida driver’s license with no more than seven points in the last 24 months or a commercial driver’s license. The candidate must possess a class “B” commercial driver’s license during the probationary period.

Minimum qualifications
All levels

  • High school diploma or possession of a GED certificate; AND
  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school or technical training program;
  • Must have EPA approved Section 609 certification; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Possession of a valid Class “B” commercial driver’s license with endorsement may be required during the probationary period.
  • Certification in welding fabrication may be required.

Wage scale: $21.75 – 29.43 Per hour
