IGP updates police database to support strategic and tactical operations

Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba on Tuesday updated the Nigeria Police Crimes and Incidents Database, a hub to facilitate and receive credible electronic information aimed at tackling insecurity.

Information in a statement released via the police’s Twitter account revealed that the upgrade will support investigations as well as strategic operational and tactical planning in carrying out their tasks.

The database, which is a police help center, “will also facilitate easy identification of suspects, location of crimes, modus operandi, global positioning system to geotag crimes, among others.”

The Nigeria Police Crimes and Incidents Database upgrade was reportedly commissioned by Muhammadu Buhari in 2020 and, according to the police, has become imperative given “the sophistication of criminals, who are now applying technology to perpetuate their nefarious activities.

The statement reads in part as follows: “The database would provide basic data using information technology and communication and biometrics, stimulate digital techniques for fighting crime and l access to a single database for the professional profiling of criminal elements and the effective management of data on crime in the Force.

“The IGP contracted the project consultant to expedite the comprehensive training of dedicated police personnel who would manage the systems at zone, state and divisional headquarters for the collection, management and upload of biometric data, records, investigations and trial process. , at the central database at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

“Similarly, the IGP has ordered a full-scale upgrade of all police forensic labs and digital resource centers across the country.”

The Chief of Police also instructed the officers of the Forensic Unit of the Force’s Criminal Investigations Department to effectively apply the advanced knowledge acquired during various capacity-building workshops held in conjunction with foreign and international agencies. other government agencies at all levels.

The IGP stressed that these developments were in line with its policing program to integrate the application of “state-of-the-art technology and an intelligence-led policing model to operational and investigative functions.” , in line with international best practices.
