Graduate students include 697 BTech and BDes students, 470 MTech and MDes students, 253 PhD students and 196 Master students. Along with this, 3 students obtained a double degree (MS + PhD).
Presenting the convocation report, Prof. TG Sitharam, Director of IIT Guwahati said, “I would like to begin by congratulating all the graduating students and their family members for their hard work and sacrifice. Faculty members, research staff and scholars are highly valued for their immense contribution to achieving this increase in research citations and I hope that we will continue this trend of improvement which has enabled IIT Guwahati to achieve a high rank in the recently announced QS Rankings 2023 where IIT Guwahati ranked 37th in the world (41st in 2022) in the “Research Citations per Faculty” category and ranks 384 in the World University Rankings.
Sitharam said, “It is worth mentioning that the research dimension of IIT Guwahati is expanding significantly and private and government-funded companies have funded various research projects sponsored by IIT Guwahati. These include, , , North East Electrical Power Corporation, Indian Space Research Organization, Purple Patch Services (an international company), Elint Technologies, Green, Agriculture and Rural Development Bank, National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency, Numaligarh Refinery Limited, OIL, INAE among others.”
IIT Guwahati attracts the brightest students from across the country for its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. The strength of international students is also growing steadily. Over the 28 years of its existence, over 18520+ students have graduated from IIT Guwahati.
Professor Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam, said, “In nearly 3 decades, IIT Guwahati has become known for its countrywide academic experience environment with its quality technical education. The institution has produced globally competitive human resources and conducted research that has greatly benefited society. This shows the social commitment of this Institute. Alumni produced by IIT Guwahati include engineers, entrepreneurs and technologists who have helped build the new India.
Rahul Mehta, Founder of Mehta Family Foundation, while appreciating the intellectual interactions he has had with IIT Guwahati over the past few years, advised all students to express their gratitude to their parents for all the sacrifices what they did for them on this memorable journey. . He also shared his entrepreneurial journey and suggested to students that if you want to reach your full potential, develop your whole person. A balanced person is a happier, more productive and more fulfilled person. Be a “lifelong learner” was his message to graduate students.
Apart from this, the Institute has 322 ongoing research projects with a total sanctioned value of around Rs. 478.55 crores. During the year under report, a total of 128 new projects with a sanctioned value of Rs. 136.62 crores were sanctioned by different funding agencies including Department of Higher Education (DHE), Departments of Science and Technology (DST) and Biotechnology (DBT), Scientific and Technical Research Board (SERB), Nuclear Science Research Board (BRNS), Research and Development Organization for Defense (DRDO) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
