Liverpool are showing the most interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, according to reports in Spain.
Currently looking for a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, Liverpool have identified Saul as a potential solution. The Spanish midfielder has fallen out of favor with Atletico, where he is still under contract until 2026. Despite this, they appear to be trying to offload him this summer.
Such a move seems to be against his will, but Saul may have to consider his options. Rodrigo De Paul’s arrival at Wanda Metropolitano only added to the competition for his place.
Therefore, there was talk of a possible swap deal with Barcelona which would see Saul move to Camp Nou and Antoine Griezmann return to the capital. However, the two agreements would have to be negotiated separately, which could complicate the scenario.
Background, Liverpool showed interest and it can be an easier transfer route. And according to AS, the Premier League team are Saul’s “most enthusiastic” contenders.
At 26, Saul is expected to be nearing his prime. Even if Atletico seem ready to do without him, a change of scenery could help him regain his best level. Therefore, it could be a perfect opportunity for Liverpool.
However, it won’t be cheap. The report warns that a price of 40 million euros, which has been speculated in the English media, would be “insufficient”.
Even so, Saul is no longer as expensive as he once was, so he may be within Liverpool’s reach. But that’s just one of the many options they’re considering.
Liverpool will therefore have to determine who is the best value for money. Since they let Wijnaldum go for free, it is essential that they find a good deal for his replacement.
Liverpool midfielder wows coaches
A player who could help fill the void left by Wijnaldum may already be at the club.
Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a player with a point to prove before next season. The 27-year-old struggled to buy time last season after missing the first three months with a knee injury.
He will be looking to stay healthy in the next campaign and may have more chances after Wijnaldum is released.
And according to assistant boss Pep Lijnders, Oxlade-Chamberlain has made a good start to the preseason.
