Bhopal: Malayalis around the world celebrated Onam for the second year in a row amid the Covid pandemic. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, in his message, said: “It is a matter of happiness that the Onam festival is celebrated virtually on August 21 of this year with various cultural programs of the United Malayalee Association.”
“Onam is the state holiday of Kerala. This festival is celebrated in memory of the days when King Mahabali reigned in Kerala. It is believed that every year on this day King Mahabali comes to his kingdom to meet his people. On this auspicious occasion of Onam, I extend my warm greetings to all Keralites, ”said the CM.
United Malayalee Association celebrated Onam’s Day. Most of the activities took place online and people enthusiastically participated.
Mahabali’s visit arrived at IGRMS and witnessed different forms of traditional art associated with the onam festival which were presented by the youth of the association. Praveen Kumar Mishra, Director, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya welcomed Raja Mahabali as well as other officials and members of the association. Traditional dances, Thumbi Thullal, Pulikali, Chendamelam etc. were also executed.
OD Joseph, President of the United Malayalee Association, said that previously we made the celebration of Onam a big event where big gatherings of people from the community. As the organization of such functions and gatherings is not possible, we opt for the virtual mode of the celebration without losing the spirit of the party. IGRMS represented a mini Kerala by keeping the ethnographic objects of Kerala like Snake Boat, Naalukettu, Aalvilaku etc.
Mahabali also paid a visit to the upper lake and accepted the people’s greetings. Apart from that, the children performed dances, songs, etc. in other places as well as part of this celebration. All the celebrations are documented and broadcast on different media platforms so that everyone can enjoy the celebrations.
